PM receives petition and request to revoke slipway activities

Prime Minister (PM) Charlot Salwai received yesterday, a letter and petition from representatives of the Ifiral Area Council, including the Area Administrator (AA) and a SHEFA Provincial Government Council councillor, representing Ifira and nearby communities outside Port Vila.

The letter and petition call for the revocation of the slipway permit and a ban on its operations in Port Vila.

The representatives expressed their concern that the slipway work permit was issued without proper community consultation, denying them the opportunity to share their opinions and concerns about the matter. They highlight the absence of a proper Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) before starting these activities.

Edward Kalsakau, the Ifira AA said Vanuatu’s commitment to being champions in the fight against climate change, is not reflected in the granting of a permit for this business to operate within Port Vila

They further requested PM Salwai to appoint a committee or task force to conduct a thorough EIA on slipway activities, and emphasise the importance of involving local communities and environmental experts in this assessment.

They also seek assurance that any future industrial operations will adhere to proper consultation protocols with surrounding communities, prioritising their well-being and interests.

The Minister of Climate Change has received a copy of the petition as well.

Champy Kalsakau, the petition leader, confirmed that the petition has gathered the signatures of more than 1,000 concerned citizens so far.
